My name is John Reinisch. I'm a microtia surgeon in Los Angeles, California. I have probably the largest microtia practice in the world. Microtia is defined as being an absent or small ear. It is uncommon. It occurs in about 1 in 10,000 births, slightly more in certain areas and slightly less in other areas of the world. It is usually one-sided. It is almost always associated with an absent or very small abnormal ear canal. This causes what we call a conductive hearing loss. It is usually not associated with kidney or heart problems, and you should know that early correction before school age even at age 3 or 4 can be done painlessly as an outpatient procedure.
