Superior Care At Reinisch Plastic Surgery By Dr. John Reinisch on November 28, 2022

Patient consultationMicrotia is a birth defect that is characterized by a small and/or deformed external ear. The condition has obvious aesthetic effects, but can also lead to hearing loss, which can further affect speech development. The only way to correct microtia is through plastic surgery, or ear reconstruction. When considering ear reconstruction, surgeon selection is vital to successful surgical results.

Dr. John Reinisch, of Reinisch Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, CA, has performed microtia surgery and other ear reconstruction techniques on patients from all over the world. Here, we provide an overview of our practice, and the experience, education, and innovation that set us apart from other plastic surgery centers.

Services Offered

Deformities of the external ear can have a huge impact on a child’s emotional well-being. Unfortunately, physical differences often make children the target of bullies, which can result in psychological trauma and stress. We offer a wide range of services that address malformation of the external ear, so that children as young as three years old can address these conditions before being exposed to emotional trauma. Some of the services we provide include:

  • Ear reconstruction
  • Microtia reconstruction
  • Pediatric plastic surgery
  • Repair of unsatisfactory previous ear surgeries

What Sets Us Apart?

While numerous plastic surgery practices may offer the services provided at Reinisch Plastic Surgery, none can match our level of experience and expertise. Dr. John Reinisch is the world’s most experienced microtia surgeon. He has seen and treated over 4,000 microtia patients.

With an education from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Reinisch is also a valued leader in the field of microtia. Dr. Reinisch has trained over 200 surgeons from 25 countries and has served on various medical boards. In 1983 Dr. Reinisch was recruited by the University of Southern California (USC) to start the Division of Pediatric Plastic Surgery in Los Angeles, CA. He has since served as the Head of the Division of Plastic Surgery at USC, as well as the Director of Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery for Cedars-Sinai Medical Group.

Dr. Renisch is supported by an impressive medical and administrative team, all of whom are passionate about what they do, and are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for the entire family, using advanced surgical techniques. This team includes members who are fluent in various languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Hungarian, and Italian so that we can serve patients from all areas of the world.

Innovative Treatment

One of the biggest differentiators of Reinisch Plastic Surgery is our innovative treatment. We specialize in MEDPOR® ear reconstruction, a technique that was developed by Dr. Reinisch in 1991. Prior to this, Dr. Reinisch was performing ear reconstruction with the traditional rib cartilage technique (a procedure that uses the patient’s own rib cartilage to reconstruct the ear). Recognizing the limitations of this technique, Dr. Reinisch developed the MEDPOR® technique, in which a biocompatible polyethylene is used to create a new ear structure.

MEDPOR® ear reconstruction allows patients to treat microtia at a much younger age (as young as three years old), and offers the added benefit of:

  • Fewer surgical procedures
  • Less scarring
  • Lower risk of surgical complications
